We were in western Virginia for a triathlon to celebrate our recent nuptials and Peter's birthday when we passed a number of wineries. Being curious, we stopped in and a new world opened up to us. We discovered that the Blue Ridge Parkway area of Virginia was becoming well known for Viognier (pronounced vee-en-yah). One winery lead to another, and another, and we brought back a case of various wines, and we learned we had not acquired a taste for mead. We explored vineyards and wineries near and far and had the opportunity to meet Happy Smith, the owner of Stonington Vineyards in Connecticut. We quickly realized that we were well suited to growing grapes and making wine.
One night, probably after a bottle of wine, we decided to order 160 vines to start with. We didn't even have the land to grow them on yet, but that seem a trivial matter at the time.
to be continued...
